1. Buy Bulk - Beans, lentils, rice, grains, flour, sugar etc… it’s usually a lot cheaper and you have more control over how much you buy as it is usually able to be scooped out of the bins at the supermarket
2. Don’t buy pre-cut meat. You can save significant amounts of money by buying a large cut of meat and then cutting and cleaning the piece yourself. By buying a larger piece, you can cut exactly the size you need and you can freeze the rest saving lots.
3. Buy frozen vegetables. This applies mainly to vegetables that are affected by the season as they tend to be very expensive during their off season. Look for those items at the frozen isle instead, where they are generally considerably cheaper. Frozen foods are also most of the time more nutritious anyway since they are frozen when they are the freshest.
4. Don’t buy canned stock/broth. Canned broth/stock is a costly ingredient that you often need quite a bit of if you are making soups or stews. For a cheaper option look for bullion cubes which you dilute in water. These little cubes give you a lot more for your money.
5 . Buy vegetables that are in season. Buy the in season vegetables that will likely be reasonably priced. For example, in winter buy winter cabbage to make a salad instead of summer lettuces.
6 . Cook double batches of food Every now and then cook twice the needed amount and freeze the extras so on a busy night full of assignments a healthy meal is waiting in the freezer ready for you to heat up and eat.
7. Label all your frozen foods Label all frozen foods with the content and the date. So nothing goes to waist and you know what needs to be used when.
8 . Seek out oriental markets and stores. When cooking with unusual ingredients often, exotic foods can be found for considerably lower prices in these specialty stores instead of your regular grocery store.
9. Eat a diet rich in whole grains. By eating meals with lots of beans, peas and lentils as well as a range of whole grains such as brown rice you will save in the wallet and in the dress size.
10. Wrap and reuse . Save the leftovers from every night’s meal as they make great snacks and fill the lunch box for the next day. This can easily be done by using reusable resalable air tight containers that can be washed and reused again and again saving you money and inconvenience.
